The flu is a contagious viral infection that affects millions of people each year as it is passed from person to person. Flu symptoms often mimic those of other upper respiratory infections.
A flu test can help determine the type and severity of the flu virus. There are several tests available, the most common one is called the rapid influenza diagnostic test which can provide results in 30 minutes or less. Results of the flu test can vary and more accurate flu tests can be performed in either a hospital or specialized laboratory. These tests usually involve swabbing the back of the throat or swiping the inside of the nasal passage.
