Pulmonary Function Tests

A pulmonary function test (PFT), also known as a spirometry test, is a diagnostic test to measure the function of the lungs.

Reasons for PFT

A pulmonary function test is performed for several reasons. It is used to evaluate the condition of the lungs, especially after a diagnosis has been made, to determine the effectiveness of the medication being used. These tests can diagnose lung diseases such as:

  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Emphysema
  • Determine the cause of lung-related symptoms
  • Pulmonary fibrosis

The airflow in and out of the lungs is measured by breathing into an instrument called a spirometer. The spirometer measures the amount and rate of air inhaled and exhaled. These measurements are recorded under various conditions in order to detect lung abnormalities.
