Urine Dip Test

A urine dip test is a method of urine testing used as part of a urinalysis, a common test to analyze urine and diagnose possible abnormalities. This test can be performed in the doctor's office simply by collecting a urine sample from the patient. It can help detect the presence of infection or diseases that may not show any symptoms. The urine dip test may be performed on its own or as part of an overall urinalysis, and involves placing a chemical strip, known as a dipstick, into the urine to test the levels of some or all of the following:

  • PH levels
  • Protein
  • Glucose
  • Blood
  • Bacteria
  • Red or white blood cells
  • Nitrites
  • Hormone levels-especially in pregnancy

This test is often performed to diagnose:

  • Urinary tract infection
  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy
  • Urinary tract injury
  • Liver disease

Other tests may also be conducted to determine a diagnosis of a medical condition. The results of a urine dip test are available right away and should be discussed with a doctor.
